Chapter 4: Omakase
Gu Jinghan immediately followed up: "I can't do it either. I'll learn along with you."
The three of them crouched attentively in front of the round toilet bowl. He Huanhuan pointed at the English words on the side of the toilet and guessed: "This is the flush button."
Gu Jingchen said: "...That's the brand name."
He Huanhuan frowned: "They print the brand name in such a random spot? That’s pretty insecure. Don’t buy from them in the future—if a brand lacks confidence, how good can it be?"
Gu Jinghan’s eyes went wide again. What solid logic! Awesome!
The three chatted animatedly, the atmosphere warm and harmonious. Gu Chacha was so jealous her eyes turned red.
Her two older brothers had always been cold and aloof. From childhood to now, they had never been this gentle with her!
Why, just because He Huanhuan showed up, did they suddenly love her so much?
It wasn’t fair to her!
Thinking of He Huanhuan’s country-bumpkin appearance, a sudden idea flashed through her mind.
"Mom, Dad, it’s rare that big sis and her two brothers get along so well. We have to celebrate!"
Putting on an overly cheerful expression, she suggested to Gu Chengye and his wife,
"Let’s not eat at home today! There’s an omakase place that just opened at Dongcheng’s Ancha Plaza. Fufu says it’s really good. How about we go there tonight?"
She cozied up to Gu Chengye, acting spoiled: "Dad, big sis has been through a lot. Let’s help her experience all the things she’s never seen before, bit by bit, okay?"
Gu Chengye was deeply moved: "Alright! Let’s show Huanhuan all the new things she’s never seen!"
"Big sis! Dad’s taking us out for omakase tonight! Let me pick out an outfit for you!"
Gu Chacha grabbed her hand affectionately and led her up to the third floor—her own private floor.
She wanted to show her how well the true children of the Gu family lived. What kind of life she herself had enjoyed for the past twenty years.
She was sure that Huanhuan would feel hurt, bitter, and envious...
But He Huanhuan wasn’t the least bit envious. After all, she wasn’t the real heiress—why would she compare herself?
When they reached the third floor, He Huanhuan’s eyes nearly popped out: "You live in a place this big all by yourself?"
Gu Chacha smiled lightly: "Mom and Dad say that girls need to be raised in luxury so they won’t be tricked by men when they grow up."
"Wise!"
He Huanhuan gave a thumbs-up in approval. Raising kids with luxury was the right way.
A child raised in abundance wouldn’t have a poor heart.
Like her, for instance.
Her grandparents had treated her so well. If she craved spicy hot pot in the middle of the night, her grandpa would take her to the county town on his bike first thing in the morning.
Look how well that turned out for her—she was thriving!
Her reaction stunned Gu Chacha. Wasn’t she angry?
This entire floor of the house should have been He Huanhuan’s!
But He Huanhuan wasn’t mad at all. She just asked, "Aren’t we picking out clothes? Where’s your closet?"
Gu Chacha forced a smile: "In the dressing room."
"Oh my god! You have a dressing room?"
He Huanhuan’s eyes lit up instantly.
Right! Rich people all had dressing rooms!
She was going to take a good look so she could brag to Qi Meili and the others when she got back.
You country bumpkins—ever seen a smart toilet? Ever seen a five-hundred-square-meter villa? Ever seen a dressing room?
Your big sister has!
Just thinking about how clueless they’d look made her want to laugh.
Her delighted expression baffled Gu Chacha. What was she so happy about?
Suppressing her anger, she opened the door to the dressing room. A warm golden light flickered on, revealing rows of little dresses inside the cabinets.
She led He Huanhuan inside and pointed to the second row of dresses: "Big sis, these are ones I used to wear. Pick whichever you like, and I’ll give it to you."
She was offering her cast-offs.
This should drive her crazy, right?
She stared intently at He Huanhuan. Sure enough, Huanhuan frowned!
She was angry! She was about to blow up!
"Why are they all dresses?"
He Huanhuan scratched her head: "Dresses look nice, but they’re not convenient for a fight!"
"Huh?"
The unexpected response made Gu Chacha’s eyes go wide: "Fight? Fight who?"
"Sigh, you wouldn’t understand."
He Huanhuan rummaged through the clothes but couldn’t find any athletic pants, so she grabbed a short skirt instead.
Long skirts weren’t good for running away. A short skirt might show a little something, but it was way faster.
After changing, the whole family set out for dinner.
He Huanhuan got terribly carsick, so none of the family cars worked for her.
In the end, Uncle Tang drove her to the Japanese restaurant on the electric scooter that the security captain used for patrols.
By the time she arrived, the others had already booked a private room and were seated, waiting for the food to be served.
He Huanhuan had no idea what they were eating tonight. As soon as she sat down, she saw the head chef walk in.
When she saw his kimono, she blurted out, "So this is a little Japanese devil’s place?"
......
The chef was silent.
Gu Chacha laughed and said, "Big sis, this is omakase. Haven’t you had it before?"
He Huanhuan looked confused: "Isn’t that English? Isn’t he a Japanese devil?"
......
Gu Chacha glanced at Old Mr. Gu. His face had already darkened.
She faintly curled her lips, sat up straighter, smiled at He Huanhuan, and explained,
"Big sis, omakase comes from the Japanese word おまかせ in Roman script. It means ‘to entrust.’ In the culinary world, it refers to letting the chef decide the menu based on that day’s ingredients."
He Huanhuan suddenly understood: "So they don’t stock up on ingredients? Then their prices must be cheap, right?"
The chef: ...... Is that really how you interpret omakase?
But the people in the private room were important guests.
The chef forced a smile: "Ma’am, our ingredients are flown in fresh from Japan every day."
So, it’s very expensive.
He Huanhuan didn’t catch the subtext. She just wondered, "Wouldn’t it be fresher to buy them at the local market? No need for a plane ride."
......
The chef’s face went dark.
Gu Chengye’s face went dark too. How embarrassing!
Gu Chacha stepped in with a smile: "Big sis, Dad’s treating us today, so let’s just enjoy the meal happily~"
What she really wanted was for Dad to be unhappy.
Every bit of money in the family was in Dad’s hands.
As long as Dad didn’t like He Huanhuan, she wouldn’t get anything good.
And in Dad’s eyes, she herself would always be the gracious, considerate daughter.
All the money and resources that could go to a daughter would be hers alone.
The courses came one by one, and He Huanhuan’s face darkened with each one.
She used to think from TV that Japanese food was something fancy!
But it was all raw!
When another plate of raw fish was served, He Huanhuan finally couldn’t take it anymore: "I’m not eating anymore!"
Jiang Yulan quickly leaned in and asked her, "Huanhuan, what’s wrong?"
"I don’t like eating raw things. They taste awful and make me feel sick."
He Huanhuan wiped her mouth with disgust and asked the chef, "Don’t you have anything cooked?"
The chef felt like he was having a heart attack. The restaurant’s specialty was raw fish!
If you don’t eat raw food, why come here?
But he kept his smile: "Today we have freshly picked silver-colored red strawberries from Hokkaido, with a sugar content of 18 degrees. It took ten years to develop this variety."
He Huanhuan looked at him like he was crazy: "Isn’t that still raw?"
The chef: ...... You want cooked strawberries too?
But they still managed to get on the table—strawberries the size of a palm, arranged in neat little square wooden boxes, looking absolutely gorgeous.
He Huanhuan picked one up and took a bite. Juice burst everywhere, and the rich aroma of strawberry instantly filled her entire mouth.
"They really are good," she said.
Much better than the ones she bought for ten yuan a catty.
She reached for another to eat, but noticed that everyone else had stopped using their chopsticks.
She asked, "These strawberries are so tasty, why aren't you all eating?"
Gu Chacha smiled and replied, "Sister, we're full."
Only nine strawberries had been served in total. If they ate them all, wouldn't that make them look like nouveau riche?
But she wasn't about to remind He Huanhuan.
"Then give them all to me."
Sure enough, He Huanhuan moved the remaining two strawberries in front of herself.
She had just looked it up online—these things cost over a hundred yuan each. No wonder they tasted so good.
Gu Chengye's face instantly turned as black as charcoal. "What kind of behavior is that! Put them back!"
