The Innkeeper

Chapter 2476: Not the kind of danger you expect

Lex was bonded with Fenrir, allowing him to pull his wolf back from across realms. That was not all. In fact, Lex and Fenrir both benefited from each other’s strengths, providing each other feedback based on their own strengths. It was just that Lex was so much stronger than Fenrir, that his feedback to Fenrir was more pronounced than the other way around.

Lex didn’t mind. Fenrir, to begin with, was originally meant to be a protector of the Midnight Inn. It was just that he was generally too weak to adopt that role in most high stakes situations. But sooner or later, he’d rise up to that role, Lex was sure of it.

There was just one problem. Since before Lex had been attacked by Daekol, Fenrir had been baited away, and had gotten lost somewhere in the Dream realm. Now, he was no longer there.

Lex couldn’t well ask Eclipse to help him with every minor matter - even he wasn’t that shameless. The problem was that every time he tried to summon Fenrir, he could feel Fenrir resisting the call, as if he was caught up in something important.

Then there was the matter of Liz. She was pretty easy to find - as it turned out she was within one of the cities in the Dream realm run by Eclipse. As for others...

Lex glanced towards Z. It would be too much to put him back to work immediately, but a minor task couldn’t hurt.

"Z, I want you to go back to the Midnight Inn immediately. You can take your friends if you want. Once there, I want you to tell Velma to redeploy the Dream tavern and use it to call back all members of the Midnight Inn still within the Dream realm.

"Let everyone know that it is extremely important that everyone urgently return to the Midnight Inn for safety. There are a few people I’ll need to go and bring back personally, so I’ll join you all shortly."

Movement in and out of the Inn was still restricted for all others except through taverns. Lex felt like now, he could finally completely take control over the Inns teleportation capabilities regardless of anything else, but he didn’t have the time to get into that. The system had too many notifications he needed to deal with, and he’d get to the teleportation issue once things calmed down.

As for his current predicament, fortunately, with Eclipse right beside him, it wouldn’t be difficult to send Z and the rest to the Origin realm from where they could return to the Midnight Inn.

As for how Lex would go about rescuing everyone... he hadn’t quite figured that out yet. He would need to forcibly recall Fenrir to the Inn, and Liz he’d grab on the way. Belle though...

Lex could sense her clearly now. But traveling without being sent by the Inn, and without devils was tough.

Lex resisted the urge to sigh. Why was it that no matter how strong he became, his problems elevated with him? How nice would it be if occasionally his problems stayed at easier levels?

"How much time do you think I have before it becomes dangerous to stay out of the Inn?" he asked Eclipse.

"It’s already dangerous, but I think you’re misunderstanding where the danger is coming from," said Lunareth who glanced at Lex and found it so amusing that such a weak little creature could be so at ease while talking to Eclipse. Had one of his descendants already achieved the Dao? Only with such an achievement under his belt could a mere immortal maintain such a stable bearing in front of two Dao Lords.

"The danger is not the typical one of bandits or marauders, or of Vaelûn spontaneously manifesting a heinous fiend in your path. You don’t even need to fear that one of the laws you’ve been using will suddenly rupture and be eradicated from the framework of the universe, leaving you injured and permanently scarred.

"No, the dangers abound in the universe are all uniquely singular in nature. Vaelûn is maturing, transitioning from an immature period to a mature one. During this time, mature and relatively mature realms are the safest places to be, for anything and everything even relatively unstable can be utilized by the universe in the process.

"For example, what if Vaelûn decided that you perfectly personify the law of humanity, and decide to turn you into a law? Doing so might help it transition into a mature state. At that point, you can neither resist Vaelûn, nor escape your fate. You’ll be dead - or alive in the form of a law that can do nothing but act as it is meant to - and no one will be able to do anything about it.

"Athough what I said is merely an example, that is the kind of thing that can actually happen. So during the transition period, it’s best to stay inside a safe place. No one can predict when you may become a part of the universe’s foundation. Of course, if you have a Dao Lord escorting you throughout, you may be able to avoid such a danger, but Dao Lords themselves have to face a different kind of threat during this period. So, whether anyone likes it or not, the universe is finally going to see some peace."

Eclipse could not manage to hide her smile. Lunareths Dao was currently almost in a dormant state, so he wasn’t as in tune with the universe as he normally would be. So, while he got the gist of the issue right, he still made some minor mistakes.

"Not a single law has ruptured since the end of the Primordial Age," Eclipse told Lunareth, resisting the urge to chuckle. "But yes, theoretically, that could still happen right up until the universe matures. You don’t need to worry because even though your Midnight Realm is not fully mature, I’m sure that the Innkeeper has taken precautions to prevent it from being used up by the universe."

Lex gulped, and smiled weakly.
