Chapter 97: The Ugly Duckling Isn't Fat
Inside the property sales lobby, the scolding had been going on for over an hour without stopping.
Wang Qiang brooded with his head down, his thoughts drifting somewhere far away.
The sales team leader shouted at him passionately: “Those people are young masters and ladies, just experiencing the poor life for fun for a few days. You don’t actually think you can turn into a phoenix, do you?”
Wang Qiang muttered: “I didn’t...”
“Hmph, only you know whether you did or not. Ugly ducklings aren’t fat, and fat ducks can’t even fly!”
Wang Qiang’s head almost sank to his chest. He hadn’t wanted to fly up the branch, he just, he just...
They had said they were friends. He thought they really were friends.
“Friends? Are you kidding me? They’re that rich. Who’s going to be friends with someone like you? What are you even worth?”
The sales team leader jabbed his finger hard into Wang Qiang’s chest, his tone dripping with contempt: “Wang Qiang, how long have you been with the company?”
“Two months...”
“How many deals have you closed?”
“No deals...”
“Ha!”
The team leader let out a cold smirk: “You have the nerve to say that! This sales department has monthly performance targets, you know!”
He shot Wang Qiang a sideways glance: “You know what you need to do, right?”
Wang Qiang: “But at the interview, HR said the performance review period was six months...”
It had only been two months. The deadline hadn’t come yet.
They sold houses, not cabbages. The economy had been bad the past two years, and the real estate market was already sluggish.
On top of that, this project’s location was remote, making it even harder to sell.
He wasn’t the only one who hadn’t closed a deal...
The sales team leader sneered: “You still don’t want to leave? Leeching off this company, are you? Want to coast on half a year of base pay? Young people these days really have thick skin...”
“Watch your mouth! Wang Qiang has only been here two months. It’s totally normal not to close a deal yet!”
A coworker couldn’t stand it and stepped in to defend Wang Qiang.
The sales team leader’s face darkened: “Zhang Wei, this has nothing to do with you. Stop sticking your nose where it doesn’t belong!”
Zhang Wei wasn’t afraid of him. Sales work is sales work—he could do it anywhere!
He shot a glare right back: “So what if I do! The kid isn’t even twenty yet! Shame on you, you old geezer!”
“You dare insult me?!”
The sales team leader’s face turned red with anger: “Zhang Wei! Wang Qiang! You’re both fired! Right now, this instant, go process your resignation!”
Zhang Wei laughed coldly: “Fired, huh? Fine! Give me a legitimate reason, or you’ll have to pay me wrongful termination severance.”
He’d been at the company for over two years. Firing him? Not that easy.
“You!”
The team leader was boiling with rage. He didn’t have a legitimate reason!
He...
Oh?
He couldn’t fire Zhang Wei, but he could fire Wang Qiang!
Wang Qiang was still on probation. With poor performance during probation, he could simply decline to continue employing him.
Haha!
He burst into laughter: “When did I say I was firing you? I’m firing Wang Qiang! His probation performance was too poor, he doesn’t meet the company’s standards, so we won’t be keeping him on!”
Zhang Wei immediately panicked: “His six-month probation period hasn’t ended yet! You can’t fire him!”
The sales team leader laughed loudly: “Zhang Wei, are you kidding? His performance was poor, and the company has decided not to continue his employment. What’s wrong with that?”
“Of course there’s...”
Zhang Wei tried to argue, but Wang Qiang tugged at his sleeve to stop him: “Brother Zhang, let it go. I don’t want to stay here anyway. It’s pretty pointless.”
Wang Qiang felt he probably wasn’t cut out for sales. He might as well pack up and find a factory job working rotating shifts.
At most, he could make six or seven thousand a month.
“Then quit! I’m going with you!”
Zhang Wei grabbed his hand and headed straight to HR. Screw this crappy company! He quit too!
Working for someone else—where couldn’t he find work?
They were salespeople, so there wasn’t much to hand over.
Return their employee cards, sign the resignation confirmation, and the process was done.
Leaving the sales office, Zhang Wei cheerfully threw an arm around Wang Qiang’s neck: “I’ve wanted to get rid of that bald geezer for ages! Come on, let’s grab a drink. Later I’ll take you to your sister-in-law’s company. They’re hiring too, we can try together.”
Wang Qiang couldn’t help asking: “What does sister-in-law’s company do?”
“It’s called Amway or something. I heard it makes serious money...”
Just as the electric scooter reached the intersection, a familiar BYD drove straight toward them.
Wang Qiang sighed: “Back when I sold cars, the first deal I closed was...”
“Hey! Chubby Wang Qiang!”
A bright blond head popped out of the rear window, shouting out that loud “Chubby” at him.
Wang Qiang was dumbfounded: “You, you, you...”
He Huanhuan laughed: “What, haven’t seen me in a few days, don’t recognize me?”
From the driver’s seat, Han Mo smiled and asked him: “Isn’t it work hours right now? Where are you headed?”
Wang Qiang’s eyes couldn’t help turning red. He hadn’t been delusional!
They really did remember him. They were friends! They had come back to see him!
“Ah, forget work! That bald geezer team leader was always picking on Wang Qiang. We both got fed up and quit just now.”
Zhang Wei patted Wang Qiang and explained to Han Mo.
Han Mo frowned: “You were being targeted?”
Wang Qiang shook his head: “Well, I already quit, so no worries anymore.”
Han Mo looked at his beat-up electric scooter: “Get in, we’ll take you home to grab your stuff. From now on, you work for me.”
Holy crap! Holy crap!
Zhang Wei instantly forgot about his girlfriend and shamelessly asked: “Um, boss, could you arrange a job for me too? I quit along with Wang Qiang...”
Han Mo nodded in agreement: “Go to the company tomorrow and find Chen Yu. He’ll set you up with something suitable.”
“Thanks, boss! Thanks, boss!”
Zhang Wei was ecstatic. He didn’t even bother saying goodbye—he hopped on his scooter and sped off.
He had to go gossip with his girlfriend about this!
Han Mo took a look at Wang Qiang’s scooter, the same one that never held a charge from before.
He said: “Don’t keep this thing. Just get in. We’ll take you back to pack your things.”
“I can’t just leave it!”
Wang Qiang was reluctant. The scooter was crappy, but he could sell it to a second-hand repair shop for three hundred yuan!
“Forget going back! We’ve got to stand up for Xiaoqiang!”
He Huanhuan shouted across the back seat with her hands on her hips. They dared to bully her friend?
Heh heh... just wait!
Meili nodded: “Right!”
Her heart suddenly burned with excitement. Finally, she could get into another showdown with Huanhuan again!
That nostalgic feeling!
Oh no!
She turned to Wang Qiang: “Take off your helmet and give it to Huanhuan.”
Don’t let her get bonked in the head with a wine bottle again, or she really wouldn’t want to live!
After pulling the BYD over to the side of the road, Han Mo called Chen Yu: “Drive my Porsche over. I’ll send you the location.”
Half an hour later, Chen Yu arrived in the flashy neon-green Porsche: “What’s the rush? I didn’t even get to eat before I came.”
He Huanhuan pinched her nose as she got into the back seat: “Big deal! Time to show off!”
