Chapter 38: Do You Accept This Son-in-Law
"Uncle, don't worry. I'll take care of the money!"
Han Xuan said with great generosity, "Jiang City is just an appetizer. In the future, Chacha's concerts will be held all over the country—no, all over the world!"
His words were outrageously arrogant, and Gu Chengye's brow furrowed even tighter on the spot.
"Where are you getting the money from?"
Since when did Han Changyong have this much money?
He had no idea.
Han Xuan raised an eyebrow with a smug air. "Uncle, just rest assured. I have a friend who works in investments. He really loves art and has great faith in Chacha!"
He smiled and looked at Gu Chacha. "Isn't that right, Chacha?"
Gu Chacha nodded cheerfully. "Yes, he's fully sponsoring my concert tour."
Old Mr. Gu stared at Gu Chacha and asked, "Who is that person? What's his name? What does he do? Why is he sponsoring you?"
No one willingly makes a losing deal unless there's profit to be gained.
A global tour costs an enormous amount of money.
What was that person after?
Could Chacha afford to satisfy his greed?
All eyes fell on Gu Chacha, and Gu Jingchen's gaze was equally demanding.
Gu Chacha couldn't help but feel a surge of annoyance inwardly. The Gu family wasn't short on money.
Yet over the years, her father and her older brother had never thought to support her career.
Not a tour—not even a single solo concert had they ever considered arranging for her.
Had they ever thought about her future?
Not at all.
Now that she'd found her own path, they came asking how she got there.
They asked if that man was reliable...
Did it matter?
Whether he was reliable or not, she had already made her choice. There was no turning back.
And she didn't want to turn back. She wanted to rise above; she wanted to become a world-renowned pianist.
She wanted to completely break free from this family's constraints. She didn't want to be just a daughter of this family!
She lowered her head and didn't directly answer Old Mr. Gu's question. Instead, she smiled and asked him, "Dad, aren't you happy for me?"
Gu Chengye's face was cold. "Dad really wants to be happy for you, but you need to give Dad peace of mind."
Gu Chacha kept her head down and said nothing. Old Mr. Gu was about to press further, but Han Xuan cut in while jiggling his leg.
"Oh, Dad, don't worry! That's my friend—completely reliable! There's absolutely no problem!"
The word "Dad" made Gu Chengye's face instantly darken. "Xiaoxuan, what did you call me?"
"Dad!"
Han Xuan stood up with a grin, pulled Gu Chacha into a hug, and announced to everyone, "Chacha and I are together now. From now on, we're family!"
His flippant attitude made all present frown. Old Mr. Gu's face was as dark as dripping ink.
He looked at Gu Chacha with a gloomy expression. "Chacha, is that true?"
Gu Chacha pursed her lips and smiled. "Dad, Han Xuan is a good person, and he treats me well. We'll be happy together."
She blinked and looked at Old Mr. Gu eagerly. "Dad, you'll support us, right?"
The muscles in Old Mr. Gu's cheek twitched. He gritted out through clenched teeth, "This is your own choice. Dad naturally respects that."
But support and blessings—absolutely not.
Yet Han Xuan seemed completely unaware of the underlying tone. He grinned and asked Old Mr. Gu, "Dad, since we're family now, how about bringing me in on the East City project?"
Even He Huanhuan was stunned. She leaned over to Gu Jinghan and asked loudly, "Is this how you rich folks negotiate projects?"
Gu Jinghan rubbed his ears. "At that volume, do you really need to whisper?"
Was she trying to deafen him?
"Haha..."
Old Mr. Gu let out a dry laugh and took the chance to explain to He Huanhuan, "Today is a family dinner, so naturally we won't discuss work matters."
He then dropped the smile and said to Han Xuan, "I'm old now. About company matters, you'll have to talk to Jingchen later."
Han Xuan immediately zeroed in on Gu Jingchen. "Brother, you've got to let me in on the fun."
Gu Jingchen didn't even lift his eyes. "If you want to get involved, send me the proposal through my secretary. I'll take a look when I have time."
The coldness was palpable.
Han Xuan gritted his molars. "Fine."
What a Gu family. What a Gu Jingchen. They looked down on him like this, did they?
Just wait.
Once he made it big, they'd all come begging him to include them!
A flicker of resentment quickly rose in his eyes. His movements became noticeably rougher as he sat down.
The chair scraped against the floor with a harsh screech, showing his displeasure.
But Gu Jingchen acted as if he hadn't heard a thing, sitting expressionlessly as he ate.
After a few bites, he wiped his mouth, stood up, and said, "You all keep eating. I'm heading back to the company."
Without waiting for Han Xuan to respond, he turned and left.
Han Xuan grew even more resentful. His brow almost pressed down to his eyes. He stood up as well. "I think I've had enough too. I'm off."
Without waiting for the Gu couple to say a word, he turned and left too.
Old Mr. Gu's face darkened once more.
He gripped his chopsticks and let out a heavy sigh. "Chacha, is this your choice?"
Someone with no manners at all—what did she see in him?
Gu Chacha gave an awkward smile. "Dad, Han Xuan was really looking forward to today's family dinner. It's just that you..."
Her gaze swept over everyone present, her eyes full of grievance.
This was her first time formally bringing her boyfriend home for a meal, and what kind of attitude did they show?
None of them took this seriously. They weren't warm to Han Xuan at all.
Was this how they treated a prospective son-in-law?
Of course Han Xuan would be upset.
"You!"
Old Mr. Gu was furious. How could she not understand why he was so upset?
If she'd just brought home a reliable boyfriend, would he have acted like this?
He took a deep breath, struggling to calm down, and spoke patiently to Gu Chacha. "I don't know why you chose Han Xuan, but that man won't amount to anything. You'd better break it off with him as soon as possible."
"Dad!"
Gu Chacha glared at Old Mr. Gu in displeasure. "Why don't you have faith in me? Is it because I'm not really a child of this family? Because I don't carry your blood? Is that why you dislike me so much?"
This was her first time bringing up this matter herself, and it was over a man like that.
Old Mr. Gu felt a sharp pang in his heart. "Child, what nonsense are you talking! You grew up right under your father's eyes. How could your father not love you? It's Han Xuan who..."
He wanted to explain, but Gu Chacha wouldn't listen.
She was full of hope for that bright future ahead, and she didn't want anyone to ruin her good mood.
She slapped her chopsticks heavily onto the table. "Dad, I am determined to be with Han Xuan. I'll only ask you one thing: Are you willing to accept him as your son-in-law?"
"Chacha?"
Gu Chengye looked at his daughter in disbelief. His most well-behaved daughter was actually threatening him over a man like this?
Gu Chacha straightened her back, sitting stiffly on the chair. "Dad, will you accept him or not?"
Gu Chengye took a deep breath and clenched his fists. "If you insist on being with him, how could your father not accept it?"
After all, she was a daughter raised by him and Yulan with their own hands.
