Chapter 10: Old Gu's Arrangement
Chen Yu quickly replied with an okay.
After a moment, he couldn’t help asking another question: “But how do we explain things to Gu Chengye?”
Han Mo’s eyes flickered, and his gaze inadvertently swept over He Huanhuan.
【Gu Chacha will handle her dad.】
Gu Chacha was the kind of person raised on luxuries since childhood, a proper heiress.
If her haute couture arrived even half a day late, she’d throw a month-long tantrum.
For her birthday, she’d make a big production of dragging a group of people to France for Michelin-star dining.
She dressed herself in wealth and glamour every day, snapped countless photos, posted them on social media, and basked in the adoration of netizens.
This kind of lifestyle was built on a mountain of money.
Among the second-generation rich kids in Jiang City, she was known for being extraordinarily generous.
And the Han family was among the wealthiest—he was her best option.
As long as Gu Chacha wasn’t stupid, she’d fight for him.
【Okay.】
Chen Yu worked fast. Before the women even got home, a gift had already been delivered to Gu Chacha’s room.
A massive gift bag sat piled in front of her bed, and Gu Chacha was so furious her eyes turned red.
This Han Mo!
Yesterday, he had the nerve to ask He Huanhuan out right in front of her, and now he was sending her gifts? What was he playing at?
She couldn’t help herself and dialed Song Zhuo again: “... Fufu, what do you think he means?”
Song Zhuo shrieked on the other end: “Oh, my girl! What else could it mean? Where a man puts his money, there his heart lies!”
“So you’re saying...”
Gu Chacha’s eyes narrowed slightly. “His choice is me?”
“Otherwise? It’s not like he fell head over heels for that country bumpkin at first sight, is it?”
On the phone, Song Zhuo’s shrill voice dripped with coldness: “Chacha, people like us don’t believe in true love. Who’s the better choice? There’s no way Han Mo doesn’t know that.”
Gu Chacha nodded silently. Yes, compared to He Huanhuan, she was clearly the superior choice.
She had grown up in this circle; she knew the rules of the game.
Fawning, testing, and cutting others out—she could do it all with ease.
What did He Huanhuan have to compete with her?
“But I’m worried Dad won’t like it...”
She couldn’t help hesitating. She could tell her father wanted He Huanhuan and Han Mo to marry for a strategic alliance.
If she acted rashly, would she make him angry?
“Then don’t fight for it,” Song Zhuo said, her voice full of disdain. “Sis, you can’t have it both ways. Do you want to please your dad or land a rich husband? The choice is yours; I can’t help you with that.”
With that, she hung up without hesitation.
The busy tone buzzed on the other end, and a restless irritation crept up in Gu Chacha.
She sat on the bed for a while, then got up and went to the kitchen to wash a bowl of blueberries herself. She carried it to the second floor.
Old Mr. Gu wasn’t at the office today and was resting at home.
She knocked on the study door: “Dad, can I come in?”
The study door opened, and Old Mr. Gu asked with a smile, “Why aren’t you out hanging out with your friends?”
The smile was as warm and affectionate as always.
Gu Chacha’s nose instantly stung. Everything seemed the same, so why did she suddenly feel like she was no longer the daughter of this house?
Without needing any acting skills, her eyes reddened on the spot: “Dad...”
“Why are you crying?”
Old Mr. Gu quickly pulled her into the study, sat her down, and asked with concern.
Holding the bowl of blueberries, Gu Chacha’s tears fell freely: “I thought you didn’t want me as your daughter anymore...”
Old Mr. Gu fondly stroked her head: “Silly child, how could that be!”
He gestured with his hands to show size: “When you were little and didn’t want to sleep, I’d hold you every day and rock you to sleep. I brought you up until you were this big—how could I not want you?”
He gently took her hand and recounted bits of her childhood stories one by one.
“Remember when you first learned how to spend money and used my card at Gucci to buy a belt, saying it was for me...”
Old Mr. Gu’s face was full of pride: “You’ve been good since you were little. Out of all the kids, you’re the one I love the most.”
Gu Chacha had long forgotten these old stories. Hearing her father describe them so vividly now,
a huge wave of bitterness rushed to her eyes, and tears streamed down uncontrollably: “Then why did you make Han Mo get in touch with sister? He’s my fiancé...”
“Silly child...”
Old Mr. Gu hadn’t expected her to be upset over this.
He patted her head with his big hand and asked, “Do you like Han Mo?”
Gu Chacha shook her head. That man Han Mo was incredibly dull.
Ever since last year, they’d have dinner once a week and a movie every two weeks, like clocking in for work.
Old Mr. Gu asked her, “Then what’s got you so unhappy?”
“I...”
She hesitated. “But he’s such a good match for marriage, isn’t he? That’s what you told me, Dad.”
She hadn’t wanted this arranged marriage at first.
She wasn’t bad-looking, and she had no time for Han Mo!
She was too busy chasing after celebrities!
Last year, she became obsessed with a newly debuted idol and flew all over the world chasing after him.
Then, out of nowhere, her family arranged a marriage alliance for her, and she threw a huge fit at home.
It wasn’t until Old Mr. Gu cut off her credit cards that she resigned herself to accepting the arrangement.
She remembered him saying at the time that male stars under the spotlight couldn’t afford to keep her.
How much money could they possibly make?
A group of a dozen people splitting a concert’s earnings? Each person might get a million or so—enough for a few days of her spending?
Han Mo was her best bet.
This man would spend money to support her, keep her in luxury and comfort.
She had barely convinced herself of this when Old Mr. Gu handed Han Mo over to He Huanhuan?
So what was she? A clown?
She fumed silently, but Old Mr. Gu pretended not to notice and said with a smile, “Chacha, the Han family has messy relationships, and you’re a bit headstrong. Honestly, the Hans aren’t a good fit for you. Last year, I had no choice but to let you bear the burden. Now that Huanhuan is here, you don’t have to suffer. Isn’t that better?”
“No! It’s not!”
Gu Chacha pouted defiantly: “Dad, you’re just stringing me along! You’re obviously playing favorites with sister!”
What nonsense about her not having to suffer?
Her father just wanted to use her arranged marriage to make it up to He Huanhuan.
Hearing this, Old Mr. Gu didn’t get mad. He just sighed deeply: “Chacha, Huanhuan isn’t like you. She grew up in a small place and hasn’t seen much of the world. It’s hard to find a good match for her.”
The Han family still needed the land he controlled. If he told Han Mo to marry Huanhuan, the Hans wouldn’t refuse.
Other families wouldn’t be so easy to deal with.
Their circle was the most snobbish; they wouldn’t easily accept Huanhuan.
Chacha was different. She had been in this circle all her life, and she had plenty of options.
If not Han Mo, there would be someone else.
So Old Mr. Gu was determined to pair Han Mo with He Huanhuan.
Seeing his firm stance, Gu Chacha didn’t argue further.
She knew her father well enough—once he decided something, it was hard to change.
“Dad, I understand,” she said, lowering her head in obedient agreement.
Her long lashes covered her eyes, but they also hid her true thoughts.
Everyone had to fight for their own fate. She and He Huanhuan were not loving sisters.
